“That was… remarkable.” Irving pushed his plate away and took up his tankard.

“It was just stew, which I made. The bread bowls were purchased.” Suzanne grinned, taking up her own tankard.

“I agree with Irv.” Jessica took a sip from her tankard. “It’s been ages since I had homemade stew. But I’m sure that isn’t the only reason we’re here.”

“You’re correct, Jessica,” said Blackwing. “You two were brought here to discuss what progress has been made, if any. Irving, if you don’t mind.” He signaled.

Irving reached into his pocket and produced two gold coins, made into pendants with string. He handed one to Jessica.

“Feel free to replace the string with a chain, if you want,” Blackwing said. “Those are to be worn and kept in contact with your skin.”

“What are they for?” Jessica asked.

“Early on,” Blackwing said, “I gave one to Suzanne and she began to comprehend the arcane concepts associated with investments. It was something she wanted and needed to know. Now she is quite good at it. Those coins enhance your already existing strong points, as well as minor things that go with it. In Suzanne’s case, with her understanding of business, she understood investments. And that feeling she’d get as to what to buy or sell, it helped to tip her off that something bad was going to happen if she didn’t sell her building when she did. I have no idea what it will enhance in either of you, but I figured it would be worth a try.”

Jessica slipped the pendant over her head. “So that’s why you were so worried about something happening concerning your store?”

“For me,” Suzanne said, “it took about twenty-four hours before I noticed that I was more focused and was grasping concepts that I was ignorant of before wearing it. The longer you wear it, the better it works. I found out early on that the effects last about twenty-four hours after you remove it. I’ve had mine on for quite a while, so it may take longer to wear off.”

“Is this real gold?” Irving stared at his pendant.

“Yes, but they’re gold from my Plane, so if they’re tested, they’ll probably test as a different iso… isotope. With Jessica, I expect her agility, strength, endurance, and eyesight to improve, along with an increase in coordination. With Irving, I’m expecting an increase in intellect.”

“Oh, no! Making him smarter than he already is? He’ll be insufferable.” Jessica said, and they all laughed. “What did you do with all your stuff from the bookstore?” she asked, when everyone had calmed their laughter.

“It’s all here,” Suzanne replied. “Blackwing made the move simple. I got to see some real magic.”

“How so?” Irving said.

“He pulled out a black cloth and tossed into the air. It unfolded itself to fit the room, and as it fell it covered things in the room. Those things covered disappeared, and it refolded itself once it hit the floor. It took less than thirty minutes to empty the building—the store, my apartment, the basement, everything.
